What you will learn

This course will enable Learners to grasp a basic understanding of subject-specific skills and specialist materials: our expert tutor will guide you through a range of essential glass-forming techniques: you will be introduced to glass as a raw material, alongside kiln-forming processes necessary for the handling and cutting of glass, together with specific construction processes for fusing, slumping and small scale fuse-to-cast glass techniques. You are encouraged to develop individual design ideas from visual research to produce a range of glass test pieces exploring taught techniques, culminating in the creation of final decorative or functional glass forms.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply creative technical skills to create a wide range of fused, slumped and small-scale 3D glass forms.
  • Understand and evaluate the suitability of selected materials within the glassmaking process.
  • Work safely, independently and confidently within a glass studio environment.

Class format and activities

You will be working on set tasks undertaken within individual projects guided by your expert glass tutor, Anna Chrysopoulo. Teaching takes place in a practical workshop setting, including both demonstration and discussion. Informal assessment will take place on a continual basis throughout the course using observation, one to one discussions, as well as a group Learner presentation at the end of the course outlining the development of your glass forms. To ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, you will have regular feedback from your tutor, in a constructive and supportive environment.

What you need to know before you enrol

The fee includes tuition, specialist materials, alongside use of specialist equipment, including glass kiln firings etc. However, Learners will be expected to purchase some of their own Kiln-formed glass materials such as alternative glass types (guidance will be given by the tutor in the first session). You may need to purchase your own small tools, and possibly some additional materials as advised by your tutor.

What you need

It would be helpful to bring a sketchbook/notebook, pencils/pen/marker pen etc. You will need to wear sturdy shoes, boots or trainers (no open sandals); an apron. We have basic tools in the workshop which have been adapted to facilitate a safe learning environment. Glass and other materials are available for sale to students, however, Learners may want to buy or bring in their own resources, to have a wider variety in choice of materials.
