What you will learn

This course is designed to equip student with the necessary skills to conduct comprehensive and inspiring research for fashion and textiles projects. Participants will delve into primary and secondary research sources and use a range of visual methods to collect references and gather inspiration that will fuel their projects. Practical workshops emphasise the application of research findings for project development, including textile manipulations, developing silhouettes and shapes, designing details and garment finishings that would tell a unique story. By course completion, individuals possess research skills to inform and develop unique stories and concepts for their fashion and textiles projects.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Understand fashion research methodologies, including the use of primary and secondary sources, enabling you to choose and employ appropriate methods for diverse creative projects
  • Conduct comprehensive and inspiring research for fashion projects
  • Creatively apply research to development of project concept and practical experimentation, such as textile and stand manipulations, and support decision-making in design development

    The course is designed to foster a dynamic learning environment that caters to students of varying skill levels and backgrounds. The classes are structured to accommodate both whole class activities and one-to-one tutorials. Sessions incorporate various teaching methods, including tutor鈥檚 demonstrations and presentations, practical learning activities, and group discussions. To ensure continual progress, students receive regular and detailed feedback and guidance tailored to each student鈥檚 needs. Good attendance and punctuality are key to achieve in this practical course.

    Entry requirements

    This course is suitable for students of all levels and previous experience in fashion and textiles. Each student works on their individual body of research.

    What you need to know before you enrol

    Excellent attendance and punctuality is required from all students. Students are generally expected to spend some time outside of class for completion of activities.Please note the eating and drinking is not allowed in the fashion studios - you are allowed to have bottled water. Students must be able to read, write and understand English.

    What you need

    You will need the following equipment: paper and fabric scissors, glue stick, drawing materials (watercolour, acrylic paints, coloured pencils, pastel), brushes, masking tape, A3 sketchbook, sewing threads and needles. You will also need to budget approximately 拢50 for fabric and printing images.
